ORIANA POINDEXTER

Oriana Poindexter is a photographer and marine scientist focused on the intersection of art, science, and marine natural resources.

ORIANA POINDEXTER & SELF CONTRAST

"The blue forests of the Pacific Ocean glimmer just beneath the surface of Southern California’s waters. Today, they stand diminished due to anthropogenic impacts, but our giant kelp forests remain majestic as cathedrals, shimmering with light and life.

I dive deep into these underwater forests on a single breath of air for work, for play, and for sustenance. In this parallel universe just off the Southern California coastline, I collect images directly with a camera, and indirectly by foraging fragments of kelp, seaweed, and other materials that I later use to create unique cyanotype photograms. Every dive is different, each strand of seaweed exceptional, and every image unique."

"These camera-less photograms display the wisdom and beauty inherent in nature, and inspire contemplation of the evolving relationship humans maintain with the ocean. They are photographs extracted from the ocean, dripping wet. The resulting images are records of the state of the ocean on that particular day, recorded life-size in the blue and white palette of the sea itself."

JEN CROWE

Jen Crowe is an abstract painter working in oil & cold wax. Her work focuses on ideas of emotional transition, passage of time and connection to place.

JEN CROWE AND SELF CONTRAST

"My paintings are created without the use of brushes. Instead. I paint with squeegees. brayers and by applying paint to papers which is then transferred onto the panel. With a mixture of oils and cold wax I use paint in an extensive layering process to create a history on the panel."

"I focus on the use of color. texture and line. These elements portray depth through subtle shifts in transparency and shape. The varied layers aid in expressing a particular emotional limbo and the passage of time. I often scrape back into the many layers of wax and paint to reveal intricate details of color and the history of creating the work."
